- Potential deductions, credits, payments and records to discuss
- A preparer tracker for requests, missing items, owners and review
- A clear separation between the client questionnaire and internal tracker
How to use the client tax organizer
Customize the questionnaire for the engagement and tax year. Send each client a clean copy through your firm’s approved secure process; ask them to choose Yes, No or Unsure and provide supporting records separately.
For the internal tracker, copy starter rows for each engagement, enter a client reference and tax year, and assign owners and due dates. Mark items outside the engagement N/A and follow up on missing information. Expand the Excel table when adding rows if it does not grow automatically.
Keep sensitive information in approved systems
The questionnaire responses can contain sensitive information. Use your firm’s approved secure systems to send, receive and store them. Do not send a tracker containing information about other clients.
Do not put Social Security numbers, PINs, account numbers, passwords or source documents in either workbook. The files are starting points; tailor requests and professional review procedures to the individual engagement.
